Here are 5 important tips that would help any photographer click better shots of the infants and their families.
1. Understand Your Surroundings
Many parents prefer that their baby be photographed in his or her natural environment, such as in their bed, on a blanket in front of the TV, on the couch, and so on. Some parents would prefer to have scenes set up with props. You could also create a simple studio backdrop with perfect lighting. Just use a plain black cloth or any color that you like to have as a backdrop and make the parents and the baby stand in front of it and make sure they are not that close to the backdrops.
2. Allow the Baby to Bring You Inspiration
Everywhere you look, you will find sources of inspiration. As a good photographer, you should have a clear idea in your mind about the theme and prepare some poses too before going for the actual shoot. Look on Pinterest or use search engines to find ideas on other social media platforms. Still, the most interesting poses are the ones that are unexpected. The ones in which the baby demonstrates what he or she can do when no one is looking. And yes, the shoot always never goes as you have planned in your mind already, so do get ready for some impromptu especially when a baby is involved.
3. Involve their Mother
Mother is the first person with whom the baby is utmost comfortable and she knows how to handle their own baby. Thereby, always involve the mother or even the father in the shoot. Their parents will know how to care for the baby better than you. You don’t want to be held liable if the child is hurt during the photoshoot. The parents have a gentle touch that keeps the baby safe. And before the shoot begins always try to explain your ideas and as well get approval for the same. Do look at the factor that your ideas should be in a way that is both comfortable for the parents and the baby.
4. Lighting
Lighting has always been an important key element in the art of photography. And when it comes to babies, try not to flash any source of light directly on them. Keep the lighting soft and not flat. You’ll want to make sure that the lighting you’re using doesn’t detract from the photos. Consider installing and testing strobes before beginning the session. Set up near a window to take advantage of natural light.
5. Details
Always look out for small details when photographing infants such as their small palms, toes, fingers, etc. Try to capture their eyes when open, when they smile, also when they yawn. These are some precious moments that you do not want to miss while capturing them. Small details like these can add variety to the shots and give them a more artistic feel. And you could also gift them these detailed pictures of their baby to them in a frame and it would definitely look good in their house.
