Photographing Newborns: Tips for Getting Perfect Shots for Parents

Photographing newborns is very different from photographing flowers, older children, plants, and so on. When a baby is born, the parents take advantage of every opportunity to capture their precious bundle of joy as no one would like to miss that moment in their life.

A newborn baby evokes a wide range of emotions in parents, from joy at seeing them for the first time to exhaustion at changing their diapers after midnight. But all of this hustling is worth it for every parent because it shows how much they care about their children and love them unconditionally. To help you, parents, out there, here we have listed few tips which you can keep in mind whenever you think of photographing your newborn baby next.

Continue Taking Photographs

The first most important tip is to just continue taking their pictures, do not stop suddenly. Your baby is growing and changing on a daily basis, especially during the first few months of their life. And it’s fascinating to see how they evolve. However, if you are not on the lookout for these changes, you may miss them entirely. Many parents will take photos of their baby for the first few days but then stop until a few weeks later. They are astounded to discover how much their baby has changed. Thereby, never stop clicking their developments for at least a year.

Keep your camera close by

To fulfill the first point that you read, you need to keep your camera nearby. Babies are, for the most part, predictable. However, there will be times when your baby will do something unusual. It could be something amusing, disgusting, or simply something that needs to be recorded. If you don’t have your camera with you, you might miss out on capturing that memory on film. Always consider placing the camera in a room that is easily accessible from anywhere in the house. That way, if your baby does something out of the ordinary, you can grab the camera and just record them at the right moment.

Close Up Shots

There are few people who do not adore newborns. They are, after all, tiny and adorable. Don’t you want to go back in time to when they had tiny little toes and fingers? Take a close-up of these tiny body parts and use it to hone in on your shot. By doing so, you are emphasizing the details that are frequently overlooked. They can add a lot to your photo collection and help you get some great shots. These close-up shots are so valuable as you are capturing those things that will just go on developing each year and give you a glimpse of how fast they grew up.

Find the Ideal Position

When it comes to photographing your newborn babies, one of the most difficult things for parents to do is finding the right angle. The baby is always swaddled in blankets in the days after birth, with only their hair and a small portion of their face visible to you. Scratches, marks, bumps, and misshapen heads, on the other hand, make babies seem less than fine. You could always try these 3 positions to click the best shots of your newborn baby.

  • Close Your Distance From The Baby –  Moving closer to the baby or using a longer focal length are also perfect ways to get better views and more personal shots. If you don’t want to position the camera lens right in your baby’s face (and who actually wants to do that ?), use the longer focal length.
  • Shots for Feeding and Nurturing – Many of your best photos will be taken while your baby is feeding or nursing. After all, it elevates your baby’s position (making him or she appear more human-like) and expands the range of angles available for your photographs. There are numerous positions available, including sitting up, laying baby down on the stomach, laying down on the back, over the shoulder, and so on.
  • Bring Yourself Down To Your Baby’s Level – Why not stoop to their level for some natural baby shots? How often do you find yourself on the floor with your baby? Consider taking advantage of that time to get some great shots of your baby. Sure, getting low and close can present some challenges in terms of focal length, but you’ll get some amazing shots as if you’ve entered their world rather than looking down at them.

Choose Your Moments

There are two critical points to remember here

  • The timing
  • Equilibrium

When it comes to babies, you know they don’t move much. When they do, the shifts in position and expression can be quite subtle. One thing you can do is set your camera to continuous shooting mode so you don’t miss any of the action. You can get multiple shots with the continuous shooting mode. Of course, you must keep in mind the importance of striking a balance. You are not required to photograph everything. You can make the mistake that many parents make and leave the camera on hand to photograph everything. Alternatively, you can set it down and savor those fleeting moments that will pass you by before you know it. Maintain a healthy balance between your photography and your daily life.
